Hi there, my name is Rachel. I am the sole owner of Rem’s Rattery. I live with my fiance - who is allergic to rats - but supports my passion I have for them. I earned a degree in business administration in 2018 and I am a huge animal lover (my 10 cats would agree!). My journey into breeding started when I worked for Charles River Labs in Necropsy and Clinical Pathology. I fell in love with the lab rats who sacrificed their life for the sake of creating necessary treatments. When my time was done at CRL, I knew I wanted to pay tribute by producing rats other people will love as much as I do.

Meet the maker!

My main goal is to be completely transparent with our adopters and provide others with a great experience when owning pet rats. This is why we test for pathogens and ensure our rats are healthy and well taken care of. We will not let a rat go home if they exhibit any signs of illness or have a poor temperament not suitable for a pet home.

Our mission is to treat our animals with the respect they deserve. To them, WE are their whole world. Let’s do them justice by treating them right.

A look inside the Rattery..

I live in a home that fortunately has a finished basement, half of which is closed off to all outsiders (this includes the cats!) for the sake of my rat’s health. Anyone could potentially bring in diseases without knowing it. For this reason we are considered a “closed Rattery”. What does that mean for you? I am more than happy to send videos, pictures, and other updates upon request to see my rats or my setups, but no one is allowed inside the Rattery.

Our setup contains 3 shelving units of 4 bins per unit. Our housing system is made up of 2 rats, or a litter of rats, per 105qt DIY bin cage. I plan on expanding soon once we are done renovating our basement.

I have a cornered off free roam space where my rats enjoy running around and exploring while the cages get cleaned weekly or as needed. This process can take anywhere between 2-3hrs for me to complete due to the number of setups I have. The photos are slightly outdated as we are constantly rearranging and adding new things - such as more activity to “fill” the free roam area. I check all my rats daily to refill water, food, and to ensure they are still in good physical condition. As I am the only one to interact with them, my rats have both nature and nurture that contribute to their temperament.
